![]() Perlstein is well known as a writer on the left, but his historian's empathies are intense and unpredictable: he convincingly channels the resentment and rage on both sides of the battle lines and lets neither Nixon's cynicism nor the naivete of liberals like New York mayor John Lindsay off the hook. But he makes it fresh and relentlessly compelling, with obsessive original research and a gleefully slashing style-equal parts Walter Winchell and Hunter S. ![]() ![]() In Nixonland Rick Perlstein tells a more familiar story than the one he unearthed in his influential previous book, Before the Storm, which argued that the stunning success of modern conservatism was founded in Goldwater's massive 1964 defeat. Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: How did we go from Lyndon Johnson's landslide Democratic victory in 1964 to Richard Nixon's equally lopsided Republican reelection only eight years later? The years in between were among the most chaotic in American history, with an endless and unpopular war, riots, assassinations, social upheaval, Southern resistance, protests both peaceful and armed, and a "Silent Majority" that twice elected the central figure of the age, a brilliant politician who relished the battles of the day but ended them in disgrace. ![]()

![]() I like the fact she gently posits things she finds interesting. As she puts it, Wanderlust is “an idiosyncratic path traced … by one walker, with much doubling back and looking around”. The gist you need to know about: Wanderlust is a series of essays that esoterically explores random walking themes that take Solnit’s fancy. I found the book in the clinic “library”. Nicely, I read it during my clinic stay in India, which prescribed no movement apart from a little gentle walking. US-based writer Rebecca Solnit touches on these themes in her dense and often feminist treatise on the purposeful stroll. ![]() Hand-writing (journal writing) does the same. Walking brings us back to a dignified, even, expansive space. So much in life works too fast for discerning reflection. Walking works to the same pace as reflection, thus the former ekes out the latter. ![]() Wanderlust: A History of Walking, by Rebecca Solnitīackground to why I read this book: Walking and reflection sustain me through my angst and anxiety. Hence today’s review of What I’ve Just Finished Reading. I gravitate to reads about walking. Especially those that extrapolate the connection between mindful reflection and walking. ![]() ![]() ![]() They braved terrible prison conditions, rats, hunger strikes, and force-feedings, to bring their message to the world: that women, too, were created equal and they deserved to vote as full citizens under the law. When picketing the White House to spur the conscience of President Woodrow Wilson to fight for democracy at home as he did abroad, they were arrested and thrown in jail. ![]() While parading, they often were overwhelmed by hostile onlookers who transformed into ugly mobs. These women needed courage when they set forth armed only with cloth banners. But it's her special focus on the less well-known story of Alice Paul and her band of unstoppable soldiers for suffrage that makes With Courage and Cloth a real page turner. Ann Bausum gets inside this gripping story with an overview of the larger fight for women's voting rights, from Seneca Falls to state-by-state ballot battles. ![]() But winning this right was part of a 72-year struggle on the part of thousands of women that finally culminated with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. It may be hard now to believe that there was ever a day in the United States when women weren't allowed to vote. Bearing these standards, women took to the streets in parades and picket lines to fight for a cause they passionately believed in: that American women should be allowed to vote. When Alice Paul helped design the banners for the National Woman's Party, she suggested three colors: Purple for justice, white for purity of purpose, and gold for courage. ![]() ![]() Delivery with Standard Australia Post usually happens within 2-10 business days from time of dispatch. You can track your delivery by going to AusPost tracking and entering your tracking number - your Order Shipped email will contain this information for each parcel. Written with the depth of this sage's great wisdom, Light on Life is the culmination of a master's spiritual genius, a treasured companion to his seminal Light on Yoga. Light on Life : The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom (Iyengar Yoga Books). For the first time, Iyengar uses stories from his own life, humor, and examples from modern culture to illustrate the profound gifts that yoga offers. Here Iyengar explores the yogic goal to integrate the different parts of the self (body, emotions, mind, and soul), the role that the yoga postures and breathing techniques play in our search for wholeness, the external and internal obstacles that keep us from progressing along the path, and how yoga can transform our lives and help us to live in harmony with the world around us. Iyengar brings readers this new and more complete understanding of the yogic journey. Yoga's popularity is soaring, but its widespread acceptance as an exercise for physical fitness and the recognition of its health benefits have not been matched by an understanding of the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development that the yogic tradition can also offer. Iyengar-hailed as "the Michelangelo of yoga" (BBC) and considered by many to be one of the most important yoga masters-has spent much of his life introducing the modern world to the ancient practice of yoga. ![]() ![]() When their romance becomes a viral sensation, and both she and her daughter become the target of rabid fans and an insatiable media, Solène must face how her new status has impacted not only her life, but the lives of those closest to her.
